Oil Pastel Landscape Painting Class

oil pastel painting of a bluff

I took an oil pastel class last night. This is my first attempt at cray-pas and we worked on an unusual surface, ultra suede mat board. I felt like I was making a velvet Elvis painting but the instructor loves this surface.

She likes how the nap pokes out; I don't care for it. The gray splotches are from the nap standing in clumps.

I've ordered some books from the library and I'll give the medium another shot with a different canvas.

  1. These look great to me. Any new medium is bound to feel awkward at first - I bet it takes you no time to find a support that you like.

  2. I'm with Gary - I especially like the second one with the clouds. I think you'll love them once you find a substrate that suits you. Well done!

  3. I don't know how these look in person, but I kind of like how they look here. Great colors! I bought some oil pastels but haven't used them yet. How do you "fix" them? Can you spray over them? I heard that they never dry!

  4. Really great "firsts!" I have of that nappy paper. I have never really found a really good use for it except as a liner for a painted box or something like that, lol.

  5. Thank you for the supportive comments.

Patty I was told they never dry due to the linseed oil and beeswax. They need to be kept under glass and the instructor puts a spacer of foam core board between the artwork and the mat.

I was talking with someone tonight and she suggested using stomps for blending (I don't know if this is a local name but a stomp is a rolled piece of cardboard that resemble a pencil and can be found near charcoal supplies).

  7. These are amazing! Different media producing different result, and this is truly a breath of fresh air!
Fantastic work with the clouds, and mix of colors.

  8. They are awfully nice, despite the surface - much better than I would have expected with oil pastel. I love your colors. Reminds me of Wolf Kahn. Can't wait to see what you'll do on a surface you prefer!

  9. These are gorgeous paintings! I see what you mean about that nap. But, I'm confident that when you find something you like to work on, you'll take off, because you have really, really done well on this unforgiving surface. It is funny how we, artists, have such different taste in materials. One person loves something, another hates it!
